Hoʻokalapua

Finding ike loa in all things

Hawaiian spirituality recognizes a powerful energy (mana) in humans, animals, plants, fish, and places. Even stones possess this life force and are used for healing and fertility. Our moʻolelo in the Kumulipo (creation story) spans to the beginning of life on earth. The ancient ones speak of the 400,000 gods and goddesses who govern every aspect of life, including each occupation from fishing to farming to weaving, carving, dance & navigation. Every sport is presided over by a specific deity.  Hawaiians have always lived in both the physical & spiritual worlds, traversing back & forth as needed. The intense positive energy of the Hawaiian islands is apparent the moment you step foot on her shores. Which is why people who visit never want to leave, but we appreciate that you do. Many visitors seeking Ike loa (enlightenment) & are energetically drawn to our Hawaiian culture & spirituality. Although we are happy to share, I personally encourage you to first research your own ancestral lineage & cultural practices. You may find a deeper connection & meaning with your bloodline which will provide a stronger foundation for self identity.
Spirituality is a foundational ideology for Hawaiian culture & our worldview. We seek guidance from the gods & goddesses in the elements of makani (wind), 'āina (land), kai (ocean), ua (rain), ahi (fire) to find hō'ailona (mystical signs).  Any form of spiritual practice starts with Hā, (breath). Hā me Ka Maka'ala; Breathe with conscious intent. When we begin any type of work with Akua, a conscious effort to breathe with intentions of maluhia (peace), ha'aha'a (humility) & aloha (compassion) is needed. Because our thoughts & words we place out to the universe throught our hā will eventually become reality.  We are all co-creators with the One Akua of our reality we live in every day. Our goal is to live in harmony & joy as well as to learn. The most significant lessons in life are often mea ho'opilikia (troublesome) mis-creations, unfortunate life events. They are the choices we make & must learn from to obtain ʻike kūhohonu (spiritual insight). I want you to know that even when we project tragedy & negativity, it can be reversed or resolved, made pono by replacing negative thoughts with positive ones.

Aia ke ola i ka waha; Aia ka make i ka waha
"Life is in the mouth; Death is in the mouth"
Do you notice when you think, you ho'ohanu, (inhale) & when you express a thought you hā, (exhale). Life begins with a first breath, life ends with the last breath. Thought and breath create our reality. Expressing your thoughts with hā into the universe affects the energy & the Co2 supports life on earth.

Practice conscious hā with aloha

The Three Types of Hā Breath

These teachings were shared with me by an amazing kahu, Elithe Manuha'aipo Kahn of Oahu whom I had the honor of learning from. You can find her books on Amazon. As you learn various energy healing techniques from around the globe, you will notice similarities in the importance of breathing. All native cultures have a common technique of breath work that is foundational in their spiritual practice. In ōlelo, Hā 'ano nui, (has multiple meanings); to breathe, the number four, a grooved fishing sinker, a trough, fourth note on a musical scale, sacred foundation of Ho'okalakupua, (magic) & huna mysteries.  I want to share a bit of ike on the first meaning, which is breathe. Hā - breathe out, exhale; Ho'ohanu - breathe in, inhale.

Proper breathing is paramount to your physical and mental health and vital to spiritual health.  Hā supports the human structure and spiritual harmony. It can sooth the soul, centers, grounds and brings you back into universal alignment. We express three types of Hā breaths. Each serve a special purpose in life.

A'ala - Active, for exhaling stagnant air and healing emotional trauma. A'ala is done by ho'ohanu, inhaling through the nose then say "hā" on the exhale through the mouth. It is used for clearing stagnant air & carbon build up in the lungs & other organs. Repeat this breath 206 times in a day, one for every bone in the body.
Noho Pū - passive, for meditative contemplation, deep thought while the body is motionless. This breath is inhaled & exhaled through the nose slowly & deeply.  With the eyes & makaloa, (third eye) open as to focus on a point. This meditation takes time & dedication to master. When you do, itʻs life changing.
Ho'omana - for storing & building energy and mana (power). This breath is slowly inhaled through the nose, held for a count of eight. Then slowly exhale through the mouth, hā for a count of eight. In modern holistic medicine this is called activating the Vagus nerve.  While inhaling you squeeze the pelvic floor similar to the Hui Yin breath technique in Reiki. The final step is giving a verbal or mental command to the higher self to store this mana to be used at a later time. While doing this breath work recite in your mind "'O Kēia HĀ no Maluhia," this breath I store for Peace. Then exhale.
These breathing practices were prevalent in Hawai'i of old with all Kanaka. We unfortunately have forgotten this practice of conscious breath but it can be reintroduced if we chose. Intentional positive thoughts & inhaling resolves, while positive action & exhaling solves.
